The Journey's End
A door leads into Heaven
But to Hell with all of that!
I would simply like to stay here
And console my mewling cat
A path leads to the ocean
But the sand is in the way
It garbles, clogs my mouth,
And won't let me have my say
A step leads to another
And another after that
Pretty soon it's all just circles
'Til you end up where you're at
So stop looking up for Heaven,
Or to find an ocean's floor
Take one step and then another
The journey's what it's for
November Rains
The dormant clouds can’t hide their altered state
As shadows fall across the land once more
Enshrouding all in gloom. Is it our fate
To fight the fight these men are dying for?
Protect us, whether we be rich or poor
Our plea to those who hold the banner high.
No matter if we praise or we abhor
The task, their strength of heart we can’t deny.
Thus for the nonce, hold fast – do not decry
The service these brave souls bestow upon
Our nation, for the moment unified
Until the war is o’er and peace is won
Our servicemen and women – keep the faith
Please know that in our hearts, your home awaits
Upon the Crossing
As I cross that final threshold and afterlife passes beyond
the shadows of uncertainty,
Will I be satisfied that the impact I’ve left behind
will live on in someone’s memory?
I question everything, I look for the unwritten answers
that no one yet has found,
Although some may say they know the truth of life and death,
to me those questions still resound.
Conventional wisdom, the truth of the nonce helps little
to comfort me in my quest.
What are the reasons for life and love, for hate and death,
when the soil’s piled on our chest?
Some say that answers sought can be found in God
but I’ve been down that road.
Those answers only led to more questions, unanswered,
much to my soul’s unending woe.
For years I drifted, not knowing what to think or believe
only knowing what I didn’t,
The shackling forces of Christianity I left behind
and bid them all good riddance.
If you had asked me then, just in what did I believe
I would have answered, “Nothing.”
But I recalled that if you don’t stand for something
you’ll fall for anything.
With that in mind, I ventured out upon my quest to find
the answers I knew not.
And what I found I’ll now relay to all of you
with hopes you’ll give it thought.
I’ve found that what’s important in a life well lived
is not the path taken to grace,
But how we’ve touched those we’ve met along the path we’ve trod
who hold in our hearts a place.
I knew not then, nor do I now, if there is indeed an afterlife
but I know there’s immortality.
And upon the crossing from this plane to the next,
my soul in your hearts I’ll leave.
